Boarding Students Shine Bright in Chicago

As the Fraser Centre filled with jazz, scandal and razzle-dazzle, The McDonald College’s production of Chicago: The Musical delivered a sold-out six-show season, thanks in no small part to the incredible talent and dedication of our boarding students.

For Sophie, Molly, and Max—three senior students who reside on campus—this production marked a significant milestone in their performing arts journey. From late-night rehearsals to early-morning classes, these young artists embraced the challenge of bringing this iconic story to life.

Originally from Wamberal on the Central Coast in NSW, Sophie took on the powerhouse role of Velma Kelly. “Balancing Year 12 studies and such a demanding role was tough,” she said, “but the support from teachers and fellow boarders made it all possible. Boarding here feels like being part of one big family. We look out for each other—on and off stage.”

Molly, from Bowral, was double-cast as both Mama Morton and Martin Harrison. “I had to step way out of my comfort zone for Chicago,” she shared. “That Fosse style is no joke—it’s so specific and stylised. But it pushed me to grow. Boarding at McD feels like living in a creative bubble—in the best way possible. Everyone around you is working toward something they’re passionate about.”

Max, who joined the College from Wagga Wagga, was double-cast as Jimmy and Billy Flynn. “Working on this production has been an incredible experience,” he said. “Being able to live and breathe theatre every day, while being part of a supportive boarding community, has made all the difference.”

Chicago isn’t just a musical—it’s a masterclass in storytelling, style and satire. Set in the roaring 1920s, the show combines jazz, vaudeville, and social commentary with a whole lot of sparkle. Bringing that vision to life took dedication, passion, and plenty of late-night choreography sessions.

Led by industry veteran and Broadway alum Kate Dunn, students were immersed in professional-level training. “Ms Dunn brings so much insight to the rehearsal room,” said Sophie. “Her experience and energy inspired all of us to step up.”

Adding even more authenticity, all music was performed live by fellow students from the school’s music stream, adding depth and dynamism to every number. “It was thrilling to perform alongside our peers in the band,” said Molly. “It raised the energy every night.”

These boarding students also juggled workshops with industry professionals, vocal coaching, and academic classes—an experience that would have been nearly impossible without the immersive environment The McDonald College offers.

As show week wrapped and the last spotlight dimmed, one thing was certain: our boarders didn’t just survive the demands of Chicago—they thrived. Their performances were bold, moving and unforgettable.

“My dream is to pursue musical theatre professionally,” Max said. “And thanks to my time here, I know I’m on the right path.”
