The Secret Sister

The Year 7 – 9 Musical Theatre students are proud to present, The Secret Sister.

Deloris Van Cartier is an ambitious nightclub singer in 1970s Philadelphia whose dreams of stardom are derailed when she witnesses her gangster boyfriend, Curtis, murder an informant. Fleeing for her life, she seeks help from the police and is placed in witness protection. Officer Eddie Souther, a former classmate, hides her in the last place anyone would think to look: a convent run by the strict and sceptical Mother Superior.

Forced to abandon her glamorous lifestyle, Deloris struggles with convent rules—no drinking, no flashy clothes, no nightlife. Her brash personality clashes with the disciplined environment, but her life takes a turn when she is assigned to join the convent’s failing choir. The nuns’ enthusiasm is strong, but their singing is painfully off‑key. Deloris, drawing on her musical background, begins coaching them, introducing rhythm, harmony, and confidence. Under her guidance, the choir transforms into a joyful, soulful ensemble that revitalizes the church and captivates the community.

As the choir’s fame grows, so does the danger. Their public performances attract media attention, inadvertently revealing Deloris’s location to Curtis and his gang. When the criminals close in, the nuns rally to protect their new sister, demonstrating the deep bonds they’ve formed. Through their support, Deloris discovers a sense of belonging she never expected, learning that family can be found in the most unlikely places.

Filled with gospel‑inspired music, vibrant choreography, and heartfelt humour, The Secret Sister, celebrates friendship, transformation, and the power of community. It remains a beloved stage adaptation of the 1992 film, blending comedy and soul into an uplifting theatrical experience.
